Voted the 2003 Holly of the Year by the Holly Society of America, the leaves have a distinctive "tortoise" shape and are typically 3” long and 2” wide. This particular cultivar was found as a volunteer seedling and developed originally at McLean Nurseries in Towson, Maryland by Stewart McLean.

Along the west coast of North America, from California to British Columbia, English holly (Ilex aquifolium), which is grown commercially, is quickly spreading into native forest habitat, where it thrives in shade and crowds out native species.

For many people, holly is synonymous with English holly because it is the holly most often associated with Christmas. It is a slow-growing, densely branched tree with an erect, pyramidal growth habit.
